The list

This was originally going to be a blog post but I figured, as I’m likely to update it a lot as I get new ideas, that making it a page would be much simpler. I don’t know if I’ll be able to tick off everything on the list but when I do something on, I’ll strike it through.

My current list follow:

Shrines and Temples:

Cultural:

  • Visit a traditional onsen like Kurama Spa.
  • Try super-sento including Ooedo-Onsen-Monogatari and SpaWorld.
  • Participate in a tea ceremony and sample wagashi.
  • Use a public bathhouse.
  • Stay at a ryokan.
  • Try wagyu beef.
  • Try a kaiseki meal.
  • Go to Hiroshima and see the Peace Dome.
  • Buy a hanko (or inkan) for stamping my name on artistic things.
  • Try calligraphy and buy the necessary bits and pieces (brushes, inkstone and paper) to practice at home.
  • See a Japanese sensu fan being created/painted.
  • See the deer in Nara.
  • Sample sake.
  • See how washi is made.
  • Try traditional dyeing (aizome) in Kyoto.
  • Visit a machiya.
  • Try chankonabe.
  • Miscellaneous:
  • View plum/cherry blossom during the day and at night.
  • Visit Akihabara.
  • See Mount Fuji (no I am NOT climbing it).
  • Ride the shinkansen.
  • Sleep on a futon.
  • Visit a 100 store (this might have to be the last thing I do!).
  • Use one of those cool uber-technie toilets (and avoid those which involve squatting).
  • Go to the Studio Ghibli museum in Mitaka.
  • Visit a Japanese school and sit in on a lesson.
  • Go to a manga café.
