The list
This was originally going to be a blog post but I figured, as I’m likely to update it a lot as I get new ideas, that making it a page would be much simpler. I don’t know if I’ll be able to tick off everything on the list but when I do something on, I’ll strike it through.
My current list follow:
Shrines and Temples:
- Get a goshuin-cho and seals from every shrine and temple I visit.
- Go to the Sanjusangendo Temple in Kyoto.
- Visit Jishu Jinja, Kiyomizudera and, more importantly, enter tainai meguri in Kyoto.
- Go to Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto.
- Visit Kamigamo Jinja in Kyoto.
- See the zen sand garden of Ryoan-ji.
- Visit Nanzen-ji.
- Go to Tenri with Eri and learn more about Tenrikyo.
- Visit Nara and see Todai-ji.
- Go to Meiji Jinju in Tokyo.
- Visit Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo.
- Go to Senso-ji in Asakusa.
- Visit Kanda Myoujin in Akihabara.
- Go to Miyajima and see the floating torii gates at high tide.
- Visit Koya-san and stay at a shukubo.
- Go to Kamakura, wash money at the Zeniarai Benten Shrine and see the giant Buddha statue.
- Get my fortune (omikuji) told.
- Participate in a kigansai.
Cultural:
- Visit a traditional onsen like Kurama Spa.
- Try super-sento including Ooedo-Onsen-Monogatari and SpaWorld.
- Participate in a tea ceremony and sample wagashi.
- Use a public bathhouse.
- Stay at a ryokan.
- Try wagyu beef.
- Try a kaiseki meal.
- Go to Hiroshima and see the Peace Dome.
- Buy a hanko (or inkan) for stamping my name on artistic things.
- Try calligraphy and buy the necessary bits and pieces (brushes, inkstone and paper) to practice at home.
- See a Japanese sensu fan being created/painted.
- See the deer in Nara.
- Sample sake.
- See how washi is made.
- Try traditional dyeing (aizome) in Kyoto.
- Visit a machiya.
- Try chankonabe.
- Miscellaneous:
- View plum/cherry blossom during the day and at night.
- Visit Akihabara.
- See Mount Fuji (no I am NOT climbing it).
- Ride the shinkansen.
- Sleep on a futon.
- Visit a 100円 store (this might have to be the last thing I do!).
- Use one of those cool uber-technie toilets (and avoid those which involve squatting).
- Go to the Studio Ghibli museum in Mitaka.
- Visit a Japanese school and sit in on a lesson.
- Go to a manga café.
